It’s Open Source, free, and very popular. nvALT is a fork by Brett Terpstra and David Halter of the original Notational Velocity, which was created by Zachary Schneirov, and a few modifications by yours truly. While most things apply to the Notational Velocity base application, I will talk about nvALT exclusively in this review. I want to start this series of reviews with a software I’m fairly familiar with. I’ll show you how I do it and tell you about possible alternatives briefly. It’s of special importance if you’re writing a research paper or a book because without proper citation management things are going to be a mess for you, soon. Managing a reference file is part of the collection phase of maintaining a Zettelkasten. Today, we’ll talk about tools for a change. What do you think? Any suggestions? Mail me or reply in twitter! Go get it Since implementing this new visual representation was so unbelievably easy (remember I’m new to Mac development), changing it again should not be too much of a problem. But now, these menu items are dysfunctional.Īnother idea to make the preview less obstrusive is using a drawer which slides out of NV’s main window. There, you’ll be able to switch between three currently supported rendering modes: Textile, classic Markdown and MultiMarkdown. The preview window is invoked by pressing ⌘⌃P (Cmd-Ctrl-P) or by using the new Preview menu. Or you can type the title of a new note, hit RETURN, and instantly begin writing. The reason is that many of the apps on this list look to Notational Velocity, a Mac app, for inspiration. You can simply start typing anything, and Notational Velocity will show notes that match your keywords. There’s a distinct reason that we’re starting with Mac. It doubles as a create new note field, for lack of a better term. Notational Velocity is a tiny free application for mac, which is great for creating & storing notes. I chose this so-called HUD design (“heads-up display”, like a display made of glass in aircrafts) which most of you will already be familiar with by using Apple’s Quick Look. The search field in Notational Velocity is pure brilliance. This picture shows my favorite style of previewing notes with MultiMarkdown in Notational Velocity: in a separate tool window which floats on top.
